Xylem STEM Support Services was created to provide support to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs through the utilization of school gardening instruction at various schools throughout the Smyrna, Georgia area. We offer both in-school assistance and an after-school gardening club for children in grades 3 through 5. Xylem will accomplish this goal by funding purchases for STEM activities, overseeing relationships between content providers, and, when necessary, creating bonds with independent contractors and engaging in other activities that the board of directors asks of us to advance STEM education.
Each season-long gardening program highlights instruction in one or more of the eight pillars of the Junior Master Gardening 4-H program. These pillars are:
Plant Growth and Development
Soils and Water
Ecology and Environmental Horticulture
Insects and Diseases
Landscape Horticulture
Fruits and Nuts
Vegetables and Herbs
Life Skills and Exploration
Gardeners who participate in the program for six sessions will have learned what they need to know to earn their Junior Master Gardener Certification.
The classes are structured to allow the students a fun mixture of hands-on gardening experience and exciting science experiments designed to increase your young gardener’s understanding of the session’s topic. Your child will also have the opportunity to grow, cook and eat their own food!
